However, the NEW Bob Dylan track (and presumably the album it hails from) reveals something Ive LONG suspected: that the groaning, grunting voice hes been using on tour and in the studio for the last few years is (yet another) character voice that he can turn on and off at will. The real voice of Bob Dylan has long been a mystery -- personally, I suspect its the somewhat sweet nasal midwestern croon we hear on New Morning, Nashville Skyline, and Self Portrait -- but I also think its possible we may be hearing it on this new record, for the the first time in a LONG time; and even if it is considerably deteriorated from the croon we heard 40 years ago on his country records, it most certainly is NOT the almost guttural belch/grunt that had many Dylan fans thinking that he had truly LOST his voice. Bob pulled another fast one on ya.
