Huawei predicts launch of 5G services from 2020 The first 5G mobile services will be introduced from 2020, Huawei has predicted. The next generation of mobile broadband services will hit the market between 2020 and 2030, offering a 100-fold speed increase on the fastest mobile devices currently available, according to Huawei. A 1,000-times upturn in demand for wireless capacity will be witnessed over the next decade, the Chinese telecoms giant predicted, allowing people within reach of 5G networks to access speeds of 10Gbps. The new technology is also expected to create a range of "exciting new business opportunities" through the ability to wirelessly connect billions of devices and appliances. Dr Wen Tong, Huawei Fellow and Head of Huawei Communications Technologies Labs, claimed the introduction of 5G networks will have a significant impact on the ICT industry, bringing visual communication to the mass market and allowing people to interact remotely "as if they were meeting face to face". In combination with big data and cloud computing solutions, 5G will lead to the automation of "the entire society", he added. However, Dr Tong cautioned that much work still needs to be done before the technology becomes commercially viable. "There are a lot of innovations that need to be created and a lot of technology challenges need to be overcome to create 5G solutions," he explained
