Hub shortlisted for two awards A £4m building that has helped transform a Greater Manchester community and brought vital services under one roof for residents has been shortlisted for two top awards. The Hub in Hattersley (right) was officially opened last year and includes a community centre, library, youth club, police post and café. It is in the running in two categories at this year’s prestigious Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) North West Awards, which celebrate excellence in building and showcase the talents of the region’s property professionals. The success is a major boost for The Hub, which has acted as a catalyst for widespread regeneration in Hattersley – a former council overspill estate which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. The Hub, which has fast become a hive of community activity, is also home to owners Peak Valley Housing Association and includes Tameside Council offices too. Phil Corris, Managing Director of Peak Valley, said: “The Hub is very much at the heart of the Hattersley and Mottram communities and we’re over the moon that it has been shortlisted by RICS. “Its development has been a real labour of love for the whole community and it has provided a state-of-the-art facility that residents deserve. It has also played a big part in the wider regeneration of the estate, which has included a new Tesco store that has created much-needed jobs in the area.” The Hub has also become a landmark, standing prominently at the junction of Stockport Road and Ashworth Lane, and its construction was challenging because of undulating land at the site. Dave Smith, Director at John McCall Architects, said: “Everybody involved is incredibly proud of The Hub and of these award nominations. “From the beginning, consulting with residents and partners was key to the development. The design of The Hub places a real emphasis on light, colour, space and flexibility, and we believe it has resulted in a building that is perfectly suited to the community’s needs. “The Hub really is a landmark in Hattersley and this has been a fantastic project to be part of.” A ceremony – hosted by Channel 4 presenter and architect George Clarke – takes place at The Palace Hotel in Manchester on May 8. - You can read more about this story in the current edition (March 13) of the Tameside Reporter.
