Hubbards Marina at Johns Pass Fishing Report: 8/7/14 Inshore: - TopicsExpress

Hubbards Marina at Johns Pass Fishing Report: 8/7/14 Inshore: The tarpon are still thick inside the pass. This morning we had 7-10 of them rolling in the dock lights early morning before sunrise. Snook are feeding well when the water is moving but most anglers are getting the best results at night. Redfish have been spotty inside the pass but they are around cruising for crabs and white bait. Our favorite bait for these fish is small finger mullet. Sharks are inside the pass in force right now and can be easily targeted with cut bait. Whenever you plan to fish for sharks be sure to use a leader as long as the shark you plan to catch! The reason for this is, because when a shark makes a run his abrasive tail will continue to hit the line as he swipes his tail back and forth and this will cause your line to break unless you have a leader as long as the shark you have hooked! Flounder are still being picked up, and they love sandy bottom around structure or grass-flats. Nearshore: The red grouper seemed to have pushed out a bit deeper since the water cooled a bit after the recent weak cold front. We are doing well on grouper when we get to 90-110 foot of water, but inside of that we just aren’t finding the legal sized grouper. However, the snapper bite inshore is nuts! Our ten hour all day brought in over 350 snapper yesterday for the 18 anglers we took offshore, plus some nice hogfish, kingfish and mangroves on the side. Kingfish are finicky inside 20 miles but were starting to see a few near shore. The fall run should be right around the corner! Offshore: The mangrove snapper bite was on this weekend, and we did really well on these fish! This past weekend was amberjack opener and we did really well on the Jacks. They were excitable with vertical jigs, but the big boy of the trip was 70lbs and he ate a live spadefish. They also brought back some beautiful gag grouper that were chewing the sardines and live bait up. The scamp grouper were also plentiful and large on our recent trip, and it’s always a nice side bonus since they taste so good! While on the way out we trolled into some beautiful large kingfish too! by Hubbards Marina Dylan & Captain Mark Hubbard What’s Coming Up at Hubbard’s Marina? Our 63 hour deep drop trips have been planned! The trips will depart Thursdays at 3pm and it will return Sundays at 6am. We will fish depths of 200-600 foot at a place nick-named “The Edges”. Think you could handle this extreme fishing adventure? If so, call us today to reserve a spot because we will only allow up to 22 people on this specialty trip. The cost of this unique fishing adventure is only $495! Our October 16th 63 hour filled up in less than 48 hours, but then a few dropped off so we have a few spots on that trip. Our second 63 hour trip will be leaving November 13th, and we just added this to the system so call us ASAP to reserve yourself a spot before this trip sells out too! Gag Grouper OPENED July 1st! Also, as of August 1st Amberjack will re-open! However, we got the unfortunate news that Amberjack will be CLOSING dramatically sooner than originally predicted! Originally they weren’t supposed to close at all this year, but as of last week we were hearing they could close before the end of August, and now this week were hearing from a trusted inside source that they could be closed by August 15th! This same source says that the NMFS plans to only give a week’s notice of this ridiculous closure. In the name of being pro-active we have ADDED a second 12 hour trip Tuesday August 12th. This means we have two 12 hour day trips the week Aj’s will close. The second trip is Thursday August 14th, but since it was already booked originally it already has a few people on it so if you can, aim to go August 12th for your last shot at these Reef Donkeys! If you’d rather do a 39 hour trip for the Amberjack, because you get 4-5 times the fishing time and twice the bag limit, then don’t worry we still have plenty of room for you too before the August 15th AJ closing. August 12th we have a special mid-week 39 hour with PLENTY of room. The trip is not even 25% full yet so call us today to book your spot before the trip fills quickly! Have you missed our live webcams? We have a webcam on our dock that shows the boats unloading, and we also have a webcam pointing at our big fish weigh-in as well! You can view either of these by visiting our website: hubbardsmarina. Recently, Java did an update that made old java platforms useless this is what made our webcam issues start! Finally we got to the bottom of it, and it was so simple and annoying. However, we have found a way around this annoyance. You can unblock this on your computer by following these steps: 1. Go to Control Panel. 2. Go to Java (32-bit). 3. Go to the Security tab. 4. Set it to Medium or...add the IP address for the webcams to the exemption list --- 97.76.122.194 We are getting a new HD camera system soon and this should not be an issue after it is installed. In the meantime, thanks for all of the raving fans that often log into our cameras here at John’s Pass to view the great fish being unloaded from our fun and successful fishing trips! Don’t forget to ask about our season long gag grouper tournament! First place will win 1,000$ CASH and all proceeds from the entry fees will go back to the anglers who joined this tournament throughout the season! Top 14 anglers will win PLENTY OF CASH, rods, reels, rod and reel combos, free trips, discounted trips and much more! All prizes will be handed out at a special banquet after gag season ends. Again to recap, any proceeds from this tournament will go straight back to the top 14 anglers of the season. Hubbard’s Marina will NOT keep a penny of the entry fees, and we will be GIVING a cool thousand bucks into the pot to make it even sweeter! August 14th and the 28th we offer two 12 hour day trips for the amberjack and gag grouper when the AJ’s close! August 8th and the 22nd we have two 12 hour night trips for the gags and mangroves but these trips won’t target amberjack because we will stay closer to shore to provide more fishing time for the gags and mangos. We offered a total of eight 39 hour trips during the month of August! The upcoming 39 hour trips are the 12th, 15th, 22nd, and the 29th! August 15th we offer our special shark fishing trip! This is a 5 hour trip from 7pm till midnight Friday nights only. We go out after large trophy sharks, and we do our best for the snapper but generally the focus is on sharks and when the big predators are around not much else feeds. If you want tackle a monster apex predator, let’s go fishing on a shark trip together! August 12th and 26th we have our guided kayak fishing trips! Have you ever wanted to try fishing from a kayak? If so, this is the trip for you. Our very knowledgeable and experienced kayak guide will show you how to set up your kayak and how to fish effectively. If you’re already an experienced kayak angler, he will point you to the right area to fish! Come join us for a great day of kayak fishing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hubbards Marina 727-393-1947 Hubbardsmarina
