Humanists of Greater Portlands weekly lecture series presents: Fourteen Years in the Oregon Legislature presented by Oregon State Representative Carolyn Tomei Sunday, July 13, 2014 - 10:00 a.m., at Friendly House, NW 26th and Thurman (on-street parking) Representative Carolyn Tomei provides a summary of the 2013 and 2014 legislative session. Now in her seventh term in the Oregon Legislature, she will be retiring at the end of 2014. An advocate of the separation of church and state, she offers highlights of her legislative career especially related to the challenges presented to that separation. Currently, Ms. Tomei serves as the Chair of the House Human Services and Housing Committee. Twenty years ago, she was on the Milwaukie City Council. She was among the first to advocate for the Portland to Milwaukie Light Rail Line which opens Sept. 2015. Ms. Tomei has been honored for her “strong commitment” to mental health issues.She has also worked hard to recruit more women to run for elected office. Carolyn is a long-time member of HGP. HGPs weekly programs are presented in four broad areas relevant to Humanism: * Human Well Being * Science/Reason * Secularism * Humanities, Culture, and Morality Sunday Mornings Schedule: 8:45 Early Bird discussion, topic by consensus 9:45 Coffee, tea, juice, and cookies 10:00 Main program, weekly topics of interest to Humanists 10:00 East Room is set up for simulcast to allow parents and children a comfortable space 10:05 Humanist discussion, each week a different theme 11:30 AfterThoughts: attendees can talk with the speaker and others over light snacks provided by HGP volunteers 11:40-1:00 Classes, discussions, musicians, committees may meet (July 13: Steve Jacobs will facilitate a discussion group on Patriotism. Humanist worldview and core values will be used as a basis for discussion.) 12:15 No-Host lunch at nearby bakery, all are welcome!
