Humberside Police have now trained over two hundred Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officers and PCSOs in how to support retails as part of their Operation Sodium training. Operation Sodium is a Humberside wide partnership with the retailers to reduce shop theft. The training includes how to carry out retail crime survey’s with the store manager/security staff to highlight areas where crime prevention improvements can be developed, for instance the layout of products, CCTV systems used and staff deployment. It also includes: • a guide to the retail crime reporting process; • the requirements of the operation around store visits and patrols; • how to develop better information sharing arrangements between stores so the force can provide details of prolific offenders; and • increased communications channels the police and store as well as each other through the formation of Shop Watch schemes and the use of systems like Shop Watch online.
