Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue and Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department recently acquired Altair 4x multiple gas monitors. The gas monitors are a great tool for the EMS and fire departments when entering a potential Immediately Dangerous Life and Health (IDLH) environment. One of the more common calls the departments can be dispatched to is carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. During the winter months there is a significant increase for CO alarms in the district due to appliances used for heating. These gas monitors allow both departments to enter a potential IDLH environment until it is determined safe in an effective manner. The Altair 4x gas monitors were purchased by a grant through the Nevada State Emergency Response Commission (SERC). The SERC regulates all of Nevadas Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC), which are county based in Nevada. Throughout the year the SERC offers multiple grant opportunities for all LEPCs in Nevada. Deputy Chief Jason Manley, HGH EMS Rescue, submits grants on behalf of Humboldt Countys LEPC. Humboldt Countys LEPC was able to receive funds from a grant for purchasing equipment to beef up the countys HAZMAT equipment. The recent grant award allowed the purchase of M.S.A Altair 4x multiple gas monitors, along with docking stations for calibration and routine function testing. Two gas monitors and one docking station has been distributed to Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue and Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department. Both departments have conducted in service training on using and maintaining the monitors. Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue and Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department have a long standing mutual aid agreement for HAZMAT responses within Humboldt County. Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue maintains the LEPC HAZMAT trailer and equipment. As summed up by Jordan Kohler, Paramedic Specialist and HazMat Operator “The gas monitors are great tool when it comes to Public Safety. HGH EMS and Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department strive at continuing to offering the community outstanding public service and protection.”
