Humiliation of attendants in city hospitals unacceptable: DAK =>An apex body of doctors in Jammu and Kashmir Thursday said the ‘humiliation and harassment’ of attendants in city hospitals by the staff is unacceptable and violation of human dignity. “The misbehavior by hospital staff with attendants has become a routine in city hospitals and is unethical,” President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Dr Nisar ul Hassan said in statement. He said human dignity is inviolable and it must be respected and protected and is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights. Attendant take care of personal hygiene, activities of daily living and transportation of patients in hospitals which otherwise is duty of hospital staff, he remarked. In recent months there have been several cases of attendants being beaten or mistreated insidethe hospitals particularly in state’s summer capital Srinagar. “Attendants do not derive pleasure by going to hospitals buthave no choice but to stay with their patients who otherwise will die because of lack of basic care,”he said. The hospitals mostly blame the attendants in such cases. “Attendants won’t come to hospitals if their patients are taken care of and in fact they will be relieved of forced responsibility,” Dr Hassan said. Patients’ rights in city hospitals are violated as they do not receive considerate, respectful, safe and adequate care, he claimed. In most hospitals wards are crowded and privacy or safety is a concern. Dr Hassan said: “Government hasfailed to protect human dignity and patients rights in city hospitals to which it is duty boundand for which it should be held accountable.”
