Hundreds of people thronged the shoreline of Carlingford Lough to welcome the first cruise ship to berth in Warrenpoint Port. The Saga Pearl II, with 450 passengers on board, berthed at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday the Tourism Department of Newry and Mourne District Council in association with the Warrenpoint Chamber of Commerce put together a fantastic programme of events to entertain both the passengers and the thousands of people who flocked to Warrenpoint to enjoy this impressive sight. The weather was glorious and really showed Warrenpoint at its best. Entertainment included the Newpoint Players’ street theatre ‘A Step Back in Time’ along the promenade telling the stories of Lassara’s Leap,GI Soldiers who were in Warrenpoint during WW11, and Mill Workers from Lancashire who holidayed in Warrenpoint. Warrenpoint Ceoltas and Warrenpoint Silver Band were also located on the Promenade providing music all day and East Coast Adventure had their Climbing Wall on the Breakwater. Warrenpoint Park was crowded with people enjoying the Summertime Fayre which included music by BASIX on the Bandstand, Scottish and Irish Dancing, and the Warrenpoint, Burren and Rostrevor Chamber had lots of stalls selling local crafts. For the children there was facepainting, balloon modelling, horse drawn carriage and train rides. At 5:00 p.m. thousands of people lined the promenade to wave goodbye to the Sage Pearl II as she made her way down Carlingford Lough. Commenting on the day, Mayor Daire Hughes said: “Today has been a fantastic day for Warrenpoint and I would like to thank everyone who make it possible, including Warrenpoint Harbour Authority, Point Shipping Services, Chamber of Commerce and last but not least the Tourist Promotion Department of Newry and Mourne District Council who have been working tremendously hard over the past two months to make today the success it has been”
