Hunter had shown it can no longer be taken for granted by either - TopicsExpress

Hunter had shown it can no longer be taken for granted by either side of politics, after The Nationals delivered the closest margin in history at Saturday’s election. To have achieved a nine per cent swing – the largest swing against Labor in NSW and one of the biggest swings in the country is an incredible achievement. Hunter is now a marginal seat and Mr Fitzgibbon is on notice that if he won’t stand up for his electorate, the Nationals certainly will. That achievement in itself is worth the battle, and I hope it will result in a stronger, more attentive representation from the local Member, if only because he knows the people will be watching. The result shows that Hunter has been watching and even Labor voters are extremely dissatisfied with how they have been treated by the current Member. In a significant ‘protest vote’ almost 13 per cent of traditional Labor and Greens voters directed the first preferences elsewhere, while anecdotally there was some flow of preferences back to Labor from the Palmer United party. I am very pleased with the efforts and result in making the Hunter a marginal seat. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all our volunteers and community supporters for a great vote of confidence in myself and the Nationals as we clearly demonstrated our passion for the Hunter and that we will no longer be taken for granted.
