Hunting with a moray eel at night is quite a special event! I have hunted with snakes and sharks all around the world but not morays until now. Snakes use their tongue to smell their prey and sharks use their electromagnetic sensors to find dead or weak fish, but moray eels use their eyes to see fish at night! On the big island of Hawaii at 40 feet deep at night the eels have learned a special technique to hunt fish with humans! At the manta ray night dive site there have been divers out at night for many years with their dive lights. The moray and conger eels have taken advantage of these bright lights! They follow divers like myself and my photography partner Pamela Whitman around like little puppy dogs! When the dive light blinds a sleeping fish, like these yellow tangs the eel grabs them for dinner!! Eels like snakes, swallow their prey whole and after a big meal can go weeks and months without feeding again! I was so stoked to film this conger eel hunting in my dive light, as I have never before seen this human, eel interaction. Nature is beautiful and always evolving. Enjoy!
