Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has appealed people to observe a civil curfew on September 7 against the musical show being organised by German embassy at Shalimar gardens. Geelani also appealed to the university and college students to hold post Friday prayer protests on September 6 against the musical programme. Addressing a press conference here, Geelani said that Zubin Mehta, who is directing the musical programme at Shalimar gardens, has a history of organising such programmes in various conflict areas of the world to dilute the attention of world community from conflicts. "The musical show being organized in Shalimar garden on September 7 has political connotations. The programme is being organized to give a message to international community that there is no conflict in the state and people are enjoying such programmes,"he said. Geelani said that his faction has decided to oppose the show and has urging the people particularly the transporters to make the civil curfew successful on coming Saturday. "The entire state should observe a civil curfew on September 7. This will give a peaceful message to outside world that Kashmiris are not with the musical show. They want that the conflict should be first resolved and then such kind of programmes should be organized here,"he said. He also said that some individuals are giving it a new color that Hurriyat Conference is opposing the show because of a particular country."Let me clarify to every country including Germany. We are not against any one. We are in a state of mourning. There is no justification for the countries to organize such kind of programmes,"he said. Geelani said that such programmes are only been organized when there is complete peace and normalcy."We are in a state of war. A country has occupied our state. The entire population is fighting against it. We have lost more than one lakh youths. Thousands disappeared and are handicapped. Under such an environment such kind of programme should not be organised here,"he said. He also said that people of the state will never allow organising such programmes when the memories of the Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru and Gool Ramban killings are still afresh. "The hearts of people of the state are full of pain and sorrow. People have given countless sacrifices for the right of self determination. The musical shows and compensation cannot be an alternative for the goal of ongoing freedom movement,"he said. Again appealing to the German embassy to postpone the programme, Geelani said that European Union has already termed Jammu and Kashmir a beautiful prison on earth."The Germans should extent their support for the genuine cause of right of self determination of people of Jammu and Kashmir instead of organizing the programme. They should drop the idea of organising the programme and must support Kashmiris at international level,"he said. Accusing the Imams and Muftis of the state, Geelani said that they have maintained a criminal silence over this serious issue."The Imams and Muftis must openly oppose the programme. They must communicate to the people of the state its political connotations,"he said. (Y) Shadab
