Hush children, I know that its technically the 1st of November, - TopicsExpress

Hush children, I know that its technically the 1st of November, but in my defense, I was covering a football game (we won, yay!) and I just got started on this as soon as I got home. Today, being the last day, Ive decided that I couldnt leave it up to fate and put up a fact that some one might know (we all know who Im talking about at this point) so, Ive decided that the best way to end this is by posting five interesting and exciting facts. 1. Courtesy of the awesome Caitie and her personal experience. If you get a nose bleed, do not tilt your head back. The nasal sinuses are connected to the lacrimal duct (thats why you get a runny nose when you cry). When you tilt your head back, you risk forcing blood through the lacrimal duct which will cause you to cry blood. Also, if you tilt your head back, you will swallow blood which can cause you to vomit or choke. Its already bad that you have a nosebleed, dont make it worse by tilting your head back. 2. People are more likely to die on the way to buy a lottery ticket than to actually win the lottery. 3. Feel the bump behind your ear near your ear lobe; thats called the mastoid. The area in between the mastoid and mandible (jaw bone) houses what is known as the temporal styloid process, which looks like a pen thats been glued to the skull and functions as an attachment point for multiple muscles. Okay, so whats the big deal? Two words: Eagle Syndrome. Basically, the styloid process is slightly too long which can cause irritation, pain, and death. Lets talk about that last part a bit more. Your brain is very important and in order for it--and you--to function, it needs good blood supply. People with Eagle Syndrome could die if their styloid process also happens to come into very close contact with the carotid artery. One wrong turn (literally) and they die because they stabbed themselves with themselves. Theres a skeleton inside of you at this very moment and it may or may not be trying to kill you. 4. Castoreum is a very versatile product. It has been used in both perfumes (Chanel, Lancome, Givenchy, to name a few) and food (for its vanilla flavor). Also, it contributes to the taste and smell of cigarettes. Few people would guess that castoreum comes from an animal, even fewer would guess that it comes from beavers, and next to no one will guess that it comes from the beavers castor sacs. The castor sacs are located near the butt of the beaver and they secrete the scent used in marking territories when beavers pee. I would like to know who thought wow, look at these weird things in the beavers butt, let me taste some. Oh neato, it tastes like vanilla, lets make vanilla flavoring from it. 5. Shout out to Caitie for giving me this one, too. Pilonidal cysts. Think about the words and what it means to you...probably nothing. Lets see if I can get the phrase to strike fear into your heart as it does in mine. A pilonidal cyst is a cyst (duh) that is usually located right above the butt. They usually occur because of friction and ingrown hairs and are more likely to happen in males between the ages of 15 and 35. They can be extremely painful and can be removed through surgery. Now, heres the thing, fluid and ingrown hairs might not be the only thing that the surgeon removes, teeth have also been reported. Yup, teeth. Teeth growing right above the butt. Pilonidal cysts. I hope you now have a better understanding of the shudders I get when I see this. Well, this was fun. I may or may not do this for Thanksgiving as well, depending on your yays or nays. Its been real, until next time. Sweet dreams, everyone.
