Hydrosols are defined as a condensed water vapor that has resulted - TopicsExpress

Hydrosols are defined as a condensed water vapor that has resulted from steam passing through a fragrant plant material, and results in a liquid, water-like substance that carries the scent of the plant processed; it has the mild therapeutic properties of the plant. It is a by-product of creating essential oils which take a massive amount of plant material to produce, the essential oils float on the condensed hydrosol and are collected for sale while the hydrosols are used in toiletries, spritzers, soaps and by some Sages as a diluted therapeutic drink which does wonders for the nervous system. In the past, essential oils were considered a waste, a by-product of creating hydrosols, but times have changed as essential oils are more valuable in comparison volume for volume. While it is unlikely a person will have access to enough plant material to produce a worthwhile amount of essential oil, one can create a hydrosol with blossoms freshly gathered, in their kitchen, with simple pots and pans and a bit of ingenuity. I have been doing so for years. Just to clarify...a "hydrosol" is not water that has had essential oils added to it. Nor is one produced by soaking blossoms in cold water, that is a cold-infused tea. However hydrosols can be made without chemistry-grade, expensive equipment; I have done both and actually produce more with my simple method. They are quite lovely. So if you are looking to learn...send me the word. I would love to organize a class or teach you, one on one, how to capture that fragrance which is so fleeting. ~K. Delaney of Kataliktic Essentials
