Hypoparathyroidism is treated with vitamin D analogues & calcium - TopicsExpress

Hypoparathyroidism is treated with vitamin D analogues & calcium supplements. The aim is to normalize serum calcium via increased intestinal absorption, but does not restore PTH-dependent renal calcium reabsorption or correct diminished bone turnover. Hypercalciuria often results, even when serum calcium is maintained at below normal levels. Chronic hypercalciuria can cause irreversible renal damage and renal stones. PTH therapy has a calcium supplement & Vitamin D sparing effect where patients require less of the former & latter. Moreover it helps reduce the bone turnover and hypercalcuria.
