I AM NOT PROFITABLE I do not usually post politically sensitive items, but today I feel the need to. Many of you know that I was born with a heart defect. Several of you, who have been close to me in the past 15 or so years, know that I have been struggling to reach a point of stability with it. Thankfully, in the past couple years, my doctors have figured out a level of medication that seems to keep me ‘stable’. In the past week or so, I have been trying to refill a script for a particular med. This med is a very old but very effective medication for a variety of heart-related issues. However, my pharmacy kept telling me that it is on backorder. Last night, I took my last pill, which was only 1/3 of the necessary dose. This morning, I once again called the pharmacy, this time asking them when it may be available. The response, “Not until late December”. LATE DECEMBER!!! By then, I would be dead. As I am feeling my heart rate increase, due to lack of medication, I ask the pharmacist if the scarcity of the medication was due to more people being able to get healthcare. I hope that would be the answer. I could deal with knowing that others were taking advantage of the new opportunities and taking control of their health. Unfortunately, that was not the answer. The response hit my hears with a painful sting. The manufacturer decided that the medication that is helping me maintain a more tolerable quality of life is NO LONGER PROFITABLE! I AM NOT PROFITABLE!! My existence, my health, my welfare is NOT PROFITABLE!!! This is a company who is in business of healthCARE and clearly, is WAY more interested in the bottom line than my LIFE! I AM NOT PROFITABLE!!! The problem is NOT providing healthcare for the masses, it is an issue of holding those who seek only to PROFIT from those who are weak, accountable. In speaking with the pharmacist further, he said that this is a common occurrence and happens with more serious medications than the ones I take. Cancer meds for one! People who have success with certain meds, find themselves having to settle for less effective medications because they are not PROFITABLE! This has nothing to do with being in a certain socio-economic segment. This crosses ALL levels. This is damaging to ourselves or our loved-ones. No one is immune to this!! Sure, I could go to a different pharmacy. But why should I have to. These people have known me for 15 years. They understand all that is going on with my health. Besides, there is nothing holding their med supplier accountable for continually making that med or any other med. I had to go to three places to finally get the medication, all the while my heart rate kept climbing. I am still recovering from my missed doses. The whole thing is disgustingly sickening! I AM NOT PROFITABLE…
