I COPIED AND PASTED THIS FROM SOMEONE WHO JUST FINISHED WATCHING 12 YEARS A SLAVE. A MESSAGE TO BOTH WHITE PEOPLE AND BLACK PEOPLE, PLEASE UNDERSTAND OR BE REMINDED WHY THE WORD NIGGER NO MATTER HOW YOU WORD IT, HAD PAINFUL AND POST TRAUMATIC CONSEQUENCES BEHIND IT. UNDERSTAND THE HISTORICAL ACCOUNT BEHIND THIS WORD: First I should say I talk about this as a white man, figured I need to get that out of the way first.. I feel like this film used the N-word in a way that I have never seen depicted before on film. The very first time we hear it is after Solomon has been kidnapped and held in jail. By this time thanks mainly due to Chiwetels great performance I had already seen Solomon as a family man of great dignity. However, when Solomon argues his freedom the guard says You are no freeman, you are a runaway n-----. As I said before I am white, but in the few seconds immediately after hearing that line I feel like I in some minor way was able to understand the true power of that word. How with one word this guard was able to reduce a very loving father, skilled musician, husband, and highly intelligent human into something that was only an animal to be bought and sold. To me this scene was one of the most powerful scenes in the film.
