I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS ARTICLE written by a white male advocating that black men open carry. In an ideal world, yes, they have the right, but were not living in an ideal world. In reality unarmed black men are shot and killed and black boys are shot and killed playing with toy guys. The reality is John Crawford was executed in Walmart for carrying a BB gun... in an open carry state... the police didnt question whether the gun was real, whether he had a permit or even if he was a threat. Open carry is a lose-lose situation for black men... theyre either targets or if theyre able to get a shot off defending themselves, that will be met with a barrage of return fire. The author gives 3 reasons why black men should open carry 1. Openly carrying a gun legally (in an open-carry state) is a public display indicating that an individual does not have a criminal record. This alone undermines the basis behind racial profiling. Police dont care, if youre black and armed you getting shot on sight. 2. The epidemic of disproportionate force utilized against black men in America warrants an alternative, and legal, solution to this problem. Yes, but how is putting black men at greater risk an alternative, and legal, solution to this problem.? Police arent stopping to ask black men whether their gun is legal, hello? They see them as a threat, even unarmed black men so imagine an armed one. 3. The vast majority of African-American men will never commit a crime, so its time America realizes this fact. If openly carrying a gun will help our country overcome centuries of prejudice pertaining to skin color, then its an option that should be pursued. Talk about out of touch... black men carrying guns will not help Amerikkka overcome centuries of prejudice pertaining to skin color. All that would do is feed into the stereotypes about black men. Thats his white male privilege talking.
