I DON”T have to spend an HOUR on the elliptical or treadmill?! I just do 15 MIN of CARDIO and be done? REALLY!?!?! Today’s fact is about HIIT TRAINING! This is way more beneficial for decreasing body fat consumption than spending an hour at the same pace on the elliptical or bike. ADDED BONUS takes LESS time. Yes, I said less time and more benefits! HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. It is a series of brief MAXIMUM EFFORT high intensity exercise sessions followed by short rest periods. Canadian researchers did a study where they found out that six sessions of high intensity interval training on a stationary bike increased muscle oxidative capacity almost 50 percent in physically fit test subjects. Also, muscle glycogen increased by 20 percent and cycling endurance capacity increased by 100 percent. The protocol consisted of 4-7 repetitions of 30 second HIIT maximum effort cycling followed by 10 seconds of rest(a five minute warm up and 2 minute cool down was included). Body fat composition over a period of 6 weeks decreased by 20-30 percent in the physically fit subjects. SO pick a machine…….elliptical, stair master, treadmill, or bike and go to town!
