I, Nathan R. Jones, used a term this past weekend that is considered “hate speech.” The term was “retard” and for this I am sorry for all the people in my life I have insulted or hurt by using a poor choice of words. I have some close personal friends who are mothers to incredible children with disabilities. I have always lived my life as a person of inclusion, no matter what society tries to label each of us as. My narrow-minded use of this word towards someone I love with all my being was reprehensible. My character may forever be tarnished in the persons I’ve hurt eyes and for this I am deeply saddened. I will make every effort to never in my life use this word again. Every one of God’s children is a blessing and no person has the right to diminish their value to this world. This post was not about me, but to help to try to bring attention to the use of hateful language and its effects on those we care about. I sincerely apologize to Tyler, Erin, Jared, Leah, and Miles.
