I Remember When Well, here goes... Bruces first pastorate - TopicsExpress

I Remember When Well, here goes... Bruces first pastorate was in Cottonwood, AZ. First Southern Baptist Church of Cottonwood, to be exact. We moved there from Glen Rose, TX, where he had been youth minister for several years. Our boys were young, 5 & 7 when we moved to AZ. I have so many fond memories of those days. One of the most unique is related to the picture below. The scene is from one of my favorite classic old movies, The Greatest Show on Earth, with Charleston Heston, Jimmy Stewart, and others. It was filmed a few years before I was born. At the time we lived in AZ there were many people relocating to AZ from the Southern CA area. We occasionally ran into people who were either involved in the film industry or had family members who were famous. When I saw this old movie on the TV tonight it reminded me of one of our church members at FSBCC. I cant recall his full name, only that he and his sweet wife were members of our church there. He joined after Bruce came. He went by Doc. One afternoon our collie mix dog, Buffy, had a horrible run in with a barbed wire fence. We had no extra money for surgery on Buffys leg, but she definitely needed care. Bruce remembered that Doc was a retired vet, so we asked if we could bring Buffy over for him to look at her leg. He said, Of course, bring her on over to our place. When we got there he proceeded to put some stitches in to repair her leg and as he was doing so, he casually mentioned that the last time he had done stitches was on a lion. I said, What? He then shared with us that he was the vet for the Barnum & Bailey Circus and had been involved in the making of the movie I loved so much. He was so unassuming about all of it, and, I think really loved being able to help out his young pastor and family in our hour of need. I had not thought of that event in years...til tonight.
