I TRY NOT TO DIVE-INTO POLITICAL ISSUES - BUT I NEED TO SPEAK UP - TopicsExpress

I TRY NOT TO DIVE-INTO POLITICAL ISSUES - BUT I NEED TO SPEAK UP ABOUT SOMETHING I AM VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT... Since I was 10 years old, I can safely say I wanted to be a performer. A country singer. An entertainer. Whatever I needed to do to reach that goal - I was going to do it. When my career actually became a career, and no longer a hobby, I was entering high school in St. Paul, AB at the St. Paul Regional High. What scared me the most was the risk of failing my courses because I was on the road, honing my craft - performing across Canada - hence: missing classes. ENTER - Alberta Distance Learning I was fortunate enough to benefit from correspondence courses for all my 4 core subjects (Math, Science, English, and my favourite: Social Studies.) I worked (on my own schedule) on the road, in hotels, but for the most part at the St. Paul Alternate Education Centre (SPAEC) in my hometown. My teachers, like Mrs. Denise Sawatzky, were not only incredible educators, but also incredible mentors. It was because of my teachers and the Alberta Distance Learning concept that I was able to graduate, and pursue my music career all the while. And truth be told, this career of mine has been nothing short of amazing thus far! NOW - The Alberta Distance Learning program is being SHUT DOWN. Its being cut off. Finished. Axed. For anyone who needed this type of distance education - or for anyone who thrived in this setting - its simple to say that this is a SHAME. And dont think that these programs are JUST for high-performers, such as athletes or artists like myself. Distance learning was also beneficial for kids who need to upgrade to get into college. Distance learning was also beneficial for kids who had 1 LAST CHANCE to get their credits, after being suspended or expelled. Distance learning was the ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. ----- So I kindly request that the next time you speak with your local MLA, or if you would like to post something on your facebook pages, twitter accounts, or other social media sites - I encourage you to do so. Support Distance Education. Alberta is such a strong and capable province, that it should be supporting such innovative ideas and programs like the Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC). Please post a comment below, and share your support! Lets keep DISTANCE LEARNING alive and well in the Alberta school system. - BK adlc.ca
