I, Vivek and Ashish started Chulbulstore in Nov 2013. Its been one year now and we have learnt a few things that we would like to share that can benefit people looking to venture into e-commerce. Most of this is the stuff you already know but we just want to stress on the things that make the most difference. The 5 most important things that helped us sustain our bootstrapped business and pushed it to growth were: 1. Implementing COD: We charge Rs 50 extra for COD orders but that does not seem to deter customers from making a purchase. It has in fact doubled our sales. Indian consumers believe in cash transactions even if it means paying a little bit extra, specially when purchasing from a new website. 2. Selling through Flipkart: Flipkart not only gets us a good percentage of orders but has also helped us gaining trust of our customers. Several of our customers bought our product from Flipkart first before starting to buy directly from us. 3. Twitter v/s Facebook: We got very active on twitter very recently but have been working on facebook since a long time. This was a mistake. Twitter is very important since customers talk with you directly there and there are not fake likes unlike facebook. Focus on twitter from the start. 4. Get on the field: We started doing offline stalls in Forum Mall, Pheonix mall and then graduated to Comic Con. This helped us a lot with sales and getting repeat customers and brand exposure. Dont shy away from doing offline sales. It helps big time. 5. Spend on branding: Make good packaging covers for online as well as offline stalls. Give free stickers/posters with your branding. Dont give things that people will just throw away. This is the best investment, much better than spending on fb ads/google ads in the initial phase of the business.
