I always encourage my management clients to go out and watch their salespeople in action. Attend a presentation or listen as they talk to a prospect. Seeing people in action is the best - and only - way to be a mentor. When you actually see their needs and potential, you can properly recommend changes, training or further practice. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to have that opportunity myself. In my room was a speaker, trainer and leader, my friend Matt Case in Lansing, whom I respect greatly. Hes been there, in the front of the room, trying to convey ideas and skills, and could see deeper into what I was trying to do. Today he was kind enough to spend time on the phone with me and offer feedback. One of his suggestions, from something he saw during the program, was SO SPOT ON it caused my mind to instantly rearrange and improve my materials. Even though people applauded and enjoyed my program yesterday, Im even MORE energized to do the next instance of Yellow Pants and Pirates after our conversation. Thank you, Mentor Matthew, for your help! You not only helped me improve, but you renewed my confidence in my belief that, to be effective as a mentor or a manager, you have to get out into the field and be there with your people.
