I always enjoy participating in events centered on internationalism. Tonight I was fortunate to be invited by my friend Mariana Lopez-Owens to help show her friends (and students) from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China around Indianapolis. I met a graduate student by the name of Ge-Fan and her best friend Huang on an exchange program to learn about American culture. Today, we took Ge-Fan who works with an NGO in China focused on LGBT issues to interview a panel of faculty members of IU/IUPUI, then took a guided tour of the Damien Center so she can compare and contrast on her graduate work in HIV prevention programs and LGBT issues. Afterwards, we had dinner at English Ivys followed by mingling at Gregs where they were welcomed and approached by patrons who had talked with them about American LGBT life and shared ideas on LGBT issues in China. It was truly a great night of cultural immersion for the Chinese students in their areas of study while allowing fellow Hoosiers to learn about LGBT advocacy in China.
