I always kick off The Pregnancy Journey with an EARLY BIRD class. So here are some EARLY BIRD TIPS! focusing on some of those annoying and often rather unpleasant yet normal symptoms of pregnancy. I say normal because they are the side effects of your body miraculously adjusting for your pregnancy and getting ready for birth. We can rejoice in them, knowing the reasons why they are happening is supporting our beautiful growing baby... and whilst I encourage and enforce that positive mindset, the practical steps to make them more bearable are oh so valuable :) Leg Cramps! Uggghhhh...and they so often happen at night. Great! These are painful involuntary muscular contractions that typically affect the calf, foot or both are common during pregnancy, often striking at night during the second and third trimester. While the exact cause of leg cramps during pregnancy isnt clear, but you can take steps to prevent them.... ~ Stay Active: Regular physical activity might help prevent leg cramps during pregnancy. Before you begin an exercise program, make sure you have your health care providers OK ~ Great Shoes! Supporting, comfortable and useful...defo ones with a counter, that is the supportive area around the heal... flip flops are not so good... ~ Stay hydrated! I tell all of my gals to make sure your urine is running pale... if its darker yellow... DRINK! Try adding a slice of lemon, cucumber, mint to water to make them infusions... so much more palatable. Water is your best best to alter that dehydration... ~ Magenesium: limited research states that magnesium can help reduce muscular contractions... Try eating more magnesium-rich foods, such as whole grains, beans, dried fruits, nuts and seeds :) ~ And last but not least! Before you go to bed, stretch those calves. Rolling a bare foot over a large pop bottle will give you the motion you need to stretch the right muscles... I always tell my gals to find their favourite bottle and have it by the bed. When the cramps come, roll that bottle! Please share any other tips you may have! ~ Mamaita
