I always question about the best way to learn art. Art is not social service under standard scale just do exactly the way is. art study is individuality to me at the end, but in the beginning all we need is fundamental. I say about 20 percent of academic study to understand the fundamental of skills as tool. I think even the best academy of art in the world has to offer is the best fundamental. if you pay enough attention the information is in every where only what we need is somebody can explain us those fundamental with their own experience. for drawing and painting we have shape,Value, color and brushwork...all together as whole fundamental elements.(very important) there always alert to me to learn after somebody who only had one or two strong element no matter how famous they are, unless you do realized problem otherwise you can unconsciously put yourself into a bad situation. ( witch I see a lot of people has. I call that learn from odds, it may looks cool to learn but bad enough to mislead unless you want to) anyway my intention is to realize that people who interest to have academic quality skills not just style. as study there is nothing more than fundamental, for learning how to draw we draw what we see first then we draw what we know. at the end we have to know what we see; for practice value you blocking and separate dark and light first then you need to define what between to get better sense of value; for color you learn primary, secondary and cometary then you need to get temperature right regard of local color... ultimately painting is about depict light on 2 dimensional surface, just like the 3 dimensional sculpture the final test is when the light falls on. I think the best way to get this is not from anybody but 80 percent of work yourself from practice. yes, there are teachers that I want to learn from if somebody told me that he can paint under any circumstance without consider condition of his effective element. to me from most of artist you can get just learn the element or the painting style, that is most of us going to be end up anyway.
