I am a disturbed by a suspensions report from the YMCA. My son had a meltdown during a time out because he thought that he was being left inside the cafeteria, when he saw all the other kids line up to go out side. Now they know he is on medication for a mood disorder. They know he does not handle time outs well. He has been written up once before for the same thing. Fine and dandy suspend him. I am ok with that. But here is why I am upset. To give weight to the disruption he caused she states in her report that his screaming made the autistic kid cover his ears. Oh freaking well!!! My premature, 3 pound at birth, brain damaged kid made your special autistic kid cover his ears when he thought he was getting left behind! I am sorry there is no fancy term for my kid, for you to understand that he has trouble just as much as the Autistic kids. He may not flap his hands or show any physical signs, but he is still handicapped! He is still brain damaged! Dont justify your suspension with pity for the autistic kid! This is the second time some one tried to make me feel bad because my son effected an autistic child. The last place tried to tell me that they were good at making special arrangements for autistic children. But couldnt use preventative measures to assist my kid when he was being effected by normal children with bad behavior. We are living in a world of special labels and dont have one. How freaking hard is it to reassure my son when he is struggling? All he needs is a freaking hug, reassurance and clear outlined rules.
