I am a little late in posting this but with Rudys death and everything going on then, then my son-in-law passing and having to help to assist my daughter with all the VA and other paperwork and his funeral it had slipped my mind about this letter from our NC Governor on Rudys passing back in Dec 21st. Governor McCrory Mourns the Death Of Fayetteville Medal Of Honor Winner • DECEMBER 23, 2013 • MILITARY AND VETERANS AFFAIRS Raleigh, NC - Governor Pat McCrory issued the following statement after learning of the passing of Medal of Honor winner Rudy Hernandez, 82, of Fayetteville. The governor met Hernandez in November at Fayettevilles Veterans Day Parade as they rode along the route in a Korean War-era jeep. “Rudy Hernandez’s courage was only surpassed by his humility,” said Governor McCrory. “I only met him a month ago, but was moved by his good humor and love and commitment to our nation and state.” Hernandez, the son of a Californian migrant farm worker, was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during a Korean War battle in May 1951. Hernandez is credited with single-handedly stopping an enemy advance near Wontong-mi, killing six North Korean soldiers with his bayonet before he fell to injuries sustained from a grenade, bayonet and bullet wound. The next day Hernandez was found on the battlefield and thought to be dead when a fellow soldier detected movement from Hernandezs hand. President Harry S. Truman awarded Hernandez the Medal of Honor in April 1952 at a White House ceremony. After his military service, Hernandez went to work for the Veterans Administration as a counselor. He moved to Fayetteville in March 1980. In August, the Womack Army Medical Center & The Warrior Transition Battalion at Ft. Bragg was renamed the Corporal Rodolfo P. Hernandez, Warrior Transition Complex.
