I am a mother, not a perfect one. Got so many flaws in mothering - TopicsExpress

I am a mother, not a perfect one. Got so many flaws in mothering but never in my wildest thoughts - pushing my son to the extremes just to be among the top kids in school. With all these graduation exercises, recognitions in different schools and universities, I cant help but be more thoughtful and observant to children and to their parents. It lifts my heart to see teary eyed parents proudly pinning medals and ribbons to their children. It breaks me to see parents with heavy faces forced to attach that colorful bows or glistening medal to a childs chest. Knowing that child maintained certain rank but somehow slid down for some reasons. It was a month ago or earlier when I witnessed how a couple of moms (mothers of bright-honor kids) turned monsters towards their children. Though it was not my first time to encounter such horrible display of discipline, still my heart really goes to these children who may have burned more candles beyond what they wished for. Badmouthing for what the kids strived for. Hitting subtly under their ribs for failing to land in a top 10 or top 5 categories. Finger pointing to the kids face with voice enough to break a nearby glass are just some of the abuses suffered by our children not from the school authorities but from their own parents. A year ago I saw a mother mildly slapped her girl for failing to beat her opponent in a quiz bowl. It may have appeared more like dabbing the girls face with powder but her eyes were welling in tears. A boy was scolded. His mom hit him with a bottled water and badmouthed like shes cursing a super evil creature. Once in a while my son gets a scolding from me for failing to remind me on time about materials for school projects. I scold him everytime he brings home his packed meal untouched. I sermon him about how many kilos of rice we could have bought with that lost or misplaced textbook. I always remind Kenneth to study well (not hard - just enough to understand what is discussed in their lessons). My son and all the children are full of potentials. We as parents need not be monsters to harness and drive them to our own (parents) goals and expectations. We must bear in mind that while we aspire to produce great leaders for this land, we must make sure first to produce a better citizen for next generation.
