I am a political anarchist and do not believe in ANY State power and certainly have a lot of critiques for the present CM of West Bengal. Nonetheless, I have to say from the facts that I have gathered (I could be missing facts, certainly) after reading several mainstream newspapers (which are also, I agree Not the best source of knowledge), I have to reiterate that the present administration in India does have a political bias and is ethno centric. The “Kanyasree project” (with all its problems) has been recognized internationally. Megan Mylan’s documentary did get recognition from the Sundance Film Festival on “Kanysree”, and was rejected by the committee because it was sent as a TABLO in the show for the Republican Day Parade. I read through the arguments and find them biased, as the reason given was primarily that it was a State project and hence not acceptable; so “military” and other “projects” are ALL projects of the STATE and in that sense all are political; in representative democracy a STATE project is a citizens project, although its implementation may have a bias, depending on the political party in power (especially in developing nations). I think the rejection based on this reasoning shows that the rejection was POLITICAL and ethno centric. Having said that I would give one critique of the “Kanyasree”, women’s oppression is a lifelong process, it is not a one-time thing, so when these “girls” become “mothers” the State, if it is really sincere, should support them with affordable day care, amongst other things. Nonetheless, it is a laudable project and its rejection by the “committee” (apparently it was rejected the second time around, it was reported, so there were controversies within the committee) is reveals that the decision was not un-biased.. it reveals the narrow thinking of the administration.
