I am afraid the internet connection this morning is about as steady as a three legged Yak. Anyway, yesterday I posted the news about the Carnival Dream rescuing 39 Cuban men and women who were in a small wooden boat in a perilous sea conditions. Despite ridiculous comments from Thomas and Pine Bluff Pete lots of you were thanking the crew for the rescue and showed great sympathy for the people whose lives must have been so desperate that they piled into a wooden boat. It is not for the Captain or any of our crew to debate what will happen to them afterwards but it is the law of the sea that those in peril will be rescued; it’s as simple as that. They were given medical care, fed and looked after and although placed under watch they were treated brilliantly by our crew. So, lots of you were asking what has been happening to them since and here is an update from the Cruise director on the Carnival Dream; “John – I am overwhelmed by the response of the everyone here on the Dream. We have set up our new guests in the Crew Lounge and a steady stream of Donations have been coming in from the guests, anything from chocolates to clothing has been given to our new friends and a emotional letter of thanks was given to the Captain written by the people that were rescued. The crew had no Crew Lounge for 2 days, they just wanted our the people rescued to feel welcome “ Hennie Thanks Hennie – and again, bravo to the crew for all they did and its great to see that everyone has come together on the ship to support these desperate souls. What happens next? Well tonight at 6pm EST the Carnival Dream will rendezvous with a United States Coastguard Cutter and the refugees will be transferred there. After that, I have no idea what will happen to them. What I do know is that without the Captain of the Carnival Dream rescuing them there could quite possibly have been 39 bodies at the bottom of the sea. I know some of you out there have political views about immigration but this is not about that. This is about 39 people who looked to the sea to find a better place to live and it was that sea that nearly took their lives and the joy, the absolute rapturous joy and relief they must have felt when they saw the whale tail of the Carnival Dream was surely immeasurable. I hope one day they get the better life they were searching for.
