I am an amateur artist without any formal training so I am not - TopicsExpress

I am an amateur artist without any formal training so I am not suggesting anyone follow my lead here. I would just like to discuss how I use my paint and open up a discussion for how to use mediums, palettes, canvas, etc. I have used a variety of paints, water colors (not much) acrylic, acrylic wall paint, and oils. I like acrylics for their dry time and affordability. I used cheap acrylic wall paint on plywood panels before I scraped together enough money for oil paints. I found using acrylic clear coat as a medium and a sealant was useful in bringing out a glossy surface. I used it to seal the wood both back and front to keep it from warping. Oil paint is by far my favorite as it can be mixed on the canvas whereas acrylic, not so much. Oils take longer to dry. This is both positive and negative in my mind. With acrylics I can paint right over an area I messed up. With oils I have to wait for it to dry for a week before I can really correct anything larger than a quarter. Semi dry oil paint will grab wet paint and make it difficult to put it on smoothly. I have tried different mediums and find that I prefer not to use them at all. I tried linseed oil and do not like the feel of it. I tried mineral spirits which is acceptable for wiping off a brush between using different colors but I prefer to have plenty of brushes and not use the same brush between color changes. I use mineral spirits to stand my brushes in prior to cleaning just so the paint doesnt dry in them. I then use a bar of soap under running water to clean my brushes. I leave just enough soap in the brush to reform the hairs on the brush while they dry.
