I am an original cosponsor of legislation to bring more transparency to U.S. drone policy and end the CIA’s unaccountable use of armed drones. Congressman Ted Yoho’s #Drone Reform Act would consolidate the authority to use armed drones entirely within the Department of Defense. Currently, the CIA regularly uses armed drones for hostile paramilitary activities beyond the reach of congressional oversight. Some of these engagements are in violation of the #Constitution. Because #CIA drone strikes are veiled in secrecy and the Intelligence Budget is heavily redacted, Americans do not know where their taxpayer money goes or how it’s spent. However, if the Department of Defense had sole authority over armed drone policy, Congress and the American people would have more oversight into armed drone use and more control over how taxpayer money is directed. The CIA should focus on intelligence collection instead of paramilitary strikes.
