I am at last beginning to enjoy myself. I have been invited on tours by Virtuoso Voyager Club and they have been great. It’s the same people each time and we are beginning to bond. Today we were on an unairconditioned bus, windows closed, and 86 degrees. We were sweltering. The guide was working hard to get us another bus, but a man started complaining in a loud, unpleasant way. The tour operator said he’d get him a cab and the other passengers told him to shut up. It was a small thing, but it pulled the group together. One of the couples was on the 2011 cruise on Holland America and we have become buddies. Laura is an excellent photographer and she’s given me some good pointers. We went to a wine tasting and I said that wine sellers should have French accents. Laura said she thought that drinking wine made you start talking with a French accent. I told her that statement might turn up in one of my books. Yesterday I went to an interesting lecture by a retired Australian admiral about early explorers. One slide came up of a man in an old Navy uniform and I thought, He’s from Nantucket. He wasn’t but he had strong connections to the island. Lt. Charles Wilkes. He was a ferocious man. If he didn’t like someone on the ship, he made them get off. Considering that he was in uncharted territory, surrounded by islands full of cannibals, that was harsh. We now have 2 sea days so I’ll get back to my book. I have almost a hundred pages but I’m still not to the Olivia and Kit story. I am deeply worried about pulling it off. There is a huge amount about them in the last book I wrote and I have to make it all match. I have to get the kids right, plus the old men, then there’s Tate’s grandparents. How I wish you’d read that book so you’d know what I’m talking about!! Cameras: I have a Nikon Coolpix S9700 and it takes really great photos. The clarity is startling. I have a Nikon Df with me and some lenses, but the camera is so heavy it is hard to carry around. I’m saving it for Africa. Fantasy question: When he’s 19 years old, Kit meets someone from the future who knows him when he’s in his sixties. He asks questions. What would you want to know about an older you? I just remembered something funny about this. Many years ago I was with a group of women and one of them asked us to draw pictures of ourselves now and 20 years from then. Mine were exactly alike, with me sitting in a big chair and writing. I’d still do the same thing today! Jude
