I am back in Mesa and exhausted from so much fun in Payson at the little ranch with my daughter, son-in-law and the three grandkids. This morning before I left, we took an early morning hike up a big hill so the g-kids could show me the tipi they built! It was very impressive and certainly would qualify as a shelter if a tarp (or animal skin) was thrown over it. Not just functional, they had it decorated with animal bones and objects of beauty from the desert and also Christian symbols. It was very cool mix of cultures and felt like a spiritual effort that honored the various backgrounds of the family. The rock collection increased and GS2 discovered that underwear can be used in lieu of pockets. After we came back, I re-read aloud chapter 1 of a kids series I am writing and asked the grandkids what they wanted to happen next. They gave me plot ideas for chapter 2 and I am totally going with it and hope to have chapter 2 written for them in a couple of weeks. Granddaughter1 (age 8) is writing a parallel series with some of the the same plot ideas and I told her about Choose Your Own Adventure. She read me her first chapter of the book SHE is writing and we are going to do parallel chapters for as long as we can. We discussed chapter formats. And Grandson1 (age 5) gave his input, too. Both of the children read aloud beautifully and my daughter is home schooling. I read when I was 5, but not aloud as expressively or as confidently as these two. (Grandson 2 is apparently having fun with potty training and apparently, the woods are his #1 choice of place to mark his territory. =) I told the g-kids you can give the same ideas to many writers and it will not be the same book, that each will be unique. She already wrote the series description on the back of her book! I am so amazed because we had not discussed writing book or series descriptions yet, but she always reads the back covers of books to see what they are about. Um, she is ahead of me. I always write the description last. It was the first thing she wrote. Last night, we had a MASSIVE thunderstorm with lightning that was right over the house and blue bolts of lightning struck all over the place and it was like blue strobes going off over and over. Spectacular show, but we stayed away from the windows because it was mere FEET away. I was most impressed by SIL walking through the dark house to make sure that every one of his children (and me) were safe because the lightning was so close that it could have struck us through the windows. Somehow, that just made me love Bret even more than I do, that every one under his roof is always under his care and protection. Had lots of fun with daughter, too. I miss her tons. We must do this again. Way too fun! Okay, I need a shower and a nap and then, back to work as a writer! I needed that trip. It was awesome!
