I am basking in the glow of the 6 minute mile. This sounds better - TopicsExpress

I am basking in the glow of the 6 minute mile. This sounds better than it is. Yesterday morning in the rainy drizzle, I did intervals in Corning, all excited because on the previous day my doctor OKd my request to run to a higher heartrate limit than the 156 that would be typical for my age. After several questions, and checking of various parameters, he said I could go to 170. I thanked him and quipped that I will likely regret this tomorrow morning when Im running it. Back to yesterday morning...I have a Garmin Forerunner 620 GPS running watch which does more cool things than I even understand including heartrate monitoring...I started it tracking and then did a warm up walk with my running partner. I then did 6 sets of heartrate intervals where I ran as fast as I could run until the heartrate alarm went off and then slowed to a stroll while it recovered to 130 or below. I had no idea what the pace was for these until after I got to work and checked the chart on my cell phone. I had in this order: 3 intervals where I did a 6 minute mile, 1 interval of a 10 minute mile, 2 intervals of a 9 minute mile, and 1 of a 12 minute mile before calling it a day. Each interval is in the order of about 30 seconds. Not superathlete, but I was really excited until I had the thought that maybe the rain blocked the satellite etc. So, today being a sunny day, I went out at lunch time to try this again. And lo and behold I did the 6 minute mile pace again followed by two 10 minute mile paces at about 30 seconds each before deciding that i really need to give my body a rest and not do this every day. But feeling really good that its real. And thinking Id like to get there for longer distances.
