I am being faced with a career change. It seems that only 6 out of 1,000,000 people are diagnosed with a Uveal Melanoma...and Im one of those lucky people. I dont know what my vision changes are going to be but I suspect that it is very possible that my left eye wont have the level of vision that I need to safely transport students. I will never put them in danger but that means that my bus-driving could be coming to an end after 12 years. My procedure is scheduled for August 26th, in Memphis. There are only 4 or 5 doctors east of the Rockies who do the procedures, and I am fortunate that Im within 3 hours of him. So, if you are of Northern European descent and you are in your 40s, 50s or 60s, beware. Mine was discovered when I went for a vision exam for glasses. I had the option to bypass the dilation with a thing called Optomap. It takes a picture of your retina. Based on what it showed, he dilated my eyes and confirmed that hed found something...either a freckle or a melanoma. It wasnt a freckle. So, dont put off getting your eyes checked. You never know what you cant see or feel, especially if your vision is still 20-20 (with glasses) and your peripheral vision is still intact. Without that testing, that Id not had in 3 years, I still would not know and the tumor could metastasize in my liver...it still might, but Im not in control.
