I am certain that folks doing this bucket challenge thing mean - TopicsExpress

I am certain that folks doing this bucket challenge thing mean well, but all I can think of when I see these pictures are the millions of people who have no access to clean drinking water; women who walk miles every day, often risking their lives, to haul home water for their families; the catastrophic drought in California and other places in the world. We are facing a planetary water crisis. Or, as the case seems to be, not facing it. Its so interesting, really: the water is not the point in these demonstrations--water, we are saying is nothing, its cheap and free, and our refrigerators make all the ice well ever need. No, the point is our willingness to experience a momentary discomfort in the name of a greater good. Only the wealthy West would think this up; only people who reliably find water coming from their spigots. People, I might add, who hardly blink at an extraction industry which uses 4 million gallons of potable water to frack a single well, contaminating it forever. As for ASL? Like cancer, it is caused largely by genetic mutations--not mutations youre born with, mutations that occur as a result of environmental influences. What influences? we should be asking. How many neuro-toxins have been introduced into the air, the water, the soil--your food and your shampoo? We are blithley saturating ourselves in a chemical stew. Maybe a bucket of Gulf Coast water would be a better choice, or that river in Ohio. Or do I mean West Virginia? They all run together after a while.
