I am concerned for our republic like never before. Currently, at least six parts of our country want to secede from their parent states, with Texas considering leaving the country all together. The ever increasing gulf between political sides and philosophies of life is creating an environment not seen since the beginning of the civil war. Where once we were united, the idea of divide and conquer is tearing us apart. It is all left or right, up or down, right or wrong, there is no middle ground any more. I know I’ve asked this before, but how did our ancestors decide? When/if our country breaks up in any of the ways speculated of by fiction writers and conspiracy buffs, how do you decide which side you will choose? How did the early Germans decide before WWII? Certainly the Germans never saw it coming. Maybe some did and worked to create the state of affairs that caused WWII, but most Germans were blissfully ignorant. One the other hand, the American Civil War was much clearer, North/South, Free/Slave, Agricultural vs. Industrialized. Do we divide Coast/Midwest, Urban/Rural, Liberal/Conservative? To whom do I give my allegiance? The United States of America that I pledged to in grade school and spent 20 years of my life defending? The state I grew up in? The community I live in now? How do I determine which is right and true? Do I consider my own interests, or the interests of the future generations?
