I am confused by the adversity to the proposed calendar change at Crestwood. I am hoping someone can explain to me the issue. This is what I have heard: Crestwood usually starts school the last week of August, which used to be the week after the Portage County Fair. This August, the fair will be the last week of August. We are usually in school then anyway. Statewide school testing has been moved to February. Starting School earlier would give kids more instructional time before those tests. Many school districts are adopting earlier calendars. Kids are graded on tests. Teachers are graded on how well kids do on tests and the District is graded on how well kids do on tests. To start earlier benefits everyone. There is a population of about 5% of our students that are involved in 4-H and need to be at the fair. The administration recognizes that is a good educational opportunity for those kids. So, they want to work with those kids families so that an earlier calendar does not count against them. There will be opportunity for them to do a project or something in place to help them make up work. It is not meant to be a punishment to those kids but a compromise so everyone can win. Yet, I still see opposition to allowing the other 95% of the students reap the benefits of getting more educational time in before testing. Why is that? I dont get it. It sounds to me like the thought is, if this 5% has to miss this opportunity, then the other 95% should also. If you are in favor of an earlier start to give our kids extra time before testing, you need to speak up. The squeaky wheel gets the oil and I am only hearing from the people involved in the fair. Facebook and Twitter posts are a good way to voice your opinion. You can call or email the Board Office. Talk to your Board Members. The Board and Administration need to hear from the majority before they can decide what is best for the district. Get the facts before forming an opinion. Then share your opinion based on whats best for your kids.
