I am convinced more than ever that there is none of us that have fully fathomed the incarnation of God over 2,000 years ago. Immanuel, God is with us, who came and profoundly shattered the foundation of the religious and announced to the poor to shake yourself from the dust and arise. Born in the midst of animals, lived as a stranger, cut off from the land of the living, crushed for our iniquities, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. At this time of year who would dare give honor to anything other than this One? Who or what could compare to the One the Angels announced, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom God is pleased?” Oh, but we are all like sheep who have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and yet, God has laid the iniquities of us all on this One. Forgive us Father for making Christmas more about something else and for thinking that we can give place to anything or anyone that would take our eyes off of the living Word that became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
