I am deeply humbled and honored to be crowned as the next Mr. HYPHEN and receive $2,000 to directly donate to ASPIRE - Asian Students Promoting Immigrant Rights through Education to further help undocumented immigrants across the country! This year, I applied for the Mr. HYPHEN because I wanted to bring awareness about undocumented immigration issue towards API community. Currently, about 11.7 million undocumented immigrants are living in this country. Among them, 1.3 million undocumented immigrants are coming from Asia. One out of seven Korean immigrants are undocumented. Asians are now the largest group of new immigrants in this country. Given this harsh reality, API community cannot ignore this issue. With this sense of urgency, I felt that Hyphen magazine was great avenue to highlight the critical issue around immigration. The entire experience reminded me that I am PART OF THE COMMUNITY. This competition was never about me – it was about us, it was about undocumented people, our community. Throughout the process, every person had a different role to allow me to come this far and win the competition in order to help a broader community. So I would thank YOU ALL for the support! WE did it! A HUGE THANKS to Hyphen magazine for organizing this incredible event and giving us the opportunity to be part of this amazing journey. A BIG SHOUT OUT to ALL of the HYPHEN staff members and volunteers, our performers ANAK and Hollis Wong-Wear, our host Kristina Wong, our stylist Retrofit Republic, our judges, our supporters, and most importantly, four other amazing finalists: Sanjay Makhijani, Sam Jung, Leo E, and Timmy Lu! We’re very proud of you! Thank YOU ALL AGAIN! Isang Bagsak! Si Se Puede! #IamBeyond #Ju4MrHyphen #HyphenMagazine #Undocumented #Unafraid #unforgettable #Night #Suavemente
