I am extremely interested in drapes/ curtains and when and where it all began. So here come part 1. Enjoy From Myra. X Curtains Until the latter part of the 16th century in England/ ireland window curtains were virtually non-existent. Instead, internal wooden shutters were used to keep out light and cold. When curtains did finally make an appearance, they were made from one piece of fabric hung on an iron rod from iron rings sewn onto the fabric, and drawn from one side of the window only. Drapery was, however, used to partition off parts of the great hall in which the lives of the large households centred. The hangings would be both decorative and practical; they were very useful in reducing the draughts of the chilly English/irish weather. These hangings were suspended by rings on rods attached to the walls or to columns. Wall hangings were also popular as both decoration and for going some way to keeping out the chill of the cold stone walls.
