I am feeling down. It strikes me that friendships are being unnecessarily broken by this referendum in Scotland. My feeling is that we are being forced to choose between the wrong two things allowing the politicians to trick our emotions into getting behind one or the other through fear tactics. Both camps have shown themselves to be dishonest. And both will resort to psychology to achieve their ends. Almost all of the things that the Yes campaign is seeking, I want too, but not at any price. From what I am told, Salmond refused to allow a Devo-Max option on the voting paper. Thereby, turning this referendum into a nationalist battle and all the ugliness that implies. It might be in his manifesto to deliver independence, but this is more important than the SNP. And I dont mean to imply that Salmond is the only problem or the main one. They are politicians and cannot be trusted to serve our wishes. I have in in-built distrust of Tories in particular. For these reasons, I am hoping for a NO result on Thursday, and that the YES campaign would then take the time to work out what the majority of us actually want (rather than what c.50% appear to want) and how they would deliver it. Please note, this does not imply that I love the system we currently have, just that I do not have it in me to vote for extreme risk. Over the last few weeks I have tried to uncover the information which the politicians are not prepared to share and had some really interesting discussions with people I hardly knew before along the way. And I thank those people for taking the time. Whichever result we get on Thursday, I will be unhappy, because I strongly believe independence it not the issue here. And it will take a long time to mend the broken fences, if they can be mended. This makes me very sad indeed.
