I am frustrated by the number of folks that want a rescue animal - TopicsExpress

I am frustrated by the number of folks that want a rescue animal for free. The rescue paid the vet care for that dog, most likely. They pay for the supplies, food, and toys at the foster home where the dog lives until it is adopted. They pay for the office supplies to print up fliers, business cards, applications, and more. They also pay for insurance. Rescues pay for training and sometimes doggie day care for the dogs that need those things. Good rescues will give you paperwork to show the vetting done to the dog. If your dog did not cost the full fee you pay, I will be quite surprised. It is rare. Especially if the rescue takes in senior dogs, especially small dog seniors. Most surrendered animals do not have any vet care. If it has been a long time without vet care, there will be complications. Each vet trip costs money to the rescue. Each shot. Each antibiotic. Each Heartguard (or other brand of preventative for heartworm). Each Frontline (or other preventative for fleas). Each worming-sometimes 3 different types of wormer depending on that rescues policy. My favorite wormer costs $10 a pill. Multiply that alone by the number of dogs currently in the rescue group and you will see that costs raise very quickly. Instead of being angry about adoption donations, ask what the money is used for. Ask if they have any long timer dogs that they are currently treating for heartworm disease or broken bones or mange. These are all common occurrences and cost a great deal of money. THANK YOU for rescuing, but please also be an advocate for rescue. Learn what it is all about and help. Commit to fostering one dog or cat or bunny or reptile this year. JUST ONE! It will change you in ways you cannot imagine.
