I am hampered by lack of information. At first glance I thought this was a black and white photograph of a color picture, but searching turned up nothing, and after all, it is at the Met, so there would be no reason. . . and the Met classifies it as a Drawing. Klee did some similar black watercolors in 33, but the Met clearly identifies this one as an oil. Likewise, I have no idea what language La Kash-NE - one translator thinks it is French, but does not translate; another thinks it is Zulu but does not translate. It was included in an MMA exhibition African Influence in Modern Art and in The Magic of Signs and Patterns in North African Art and Zulu isnt North Africa, of course. It could be Arabic or Berber if one of Klees Tunisian- or Moroccan-inspired works. Unless one of you can enlighten us, it will remain a mystery. (Interestingly, to me at least, one of the aforementioned watercolors is named Ein negerkind versteht den schnee nicht / A negro child does not understand the snow, the title referencing the limitations of our imaginations compared with perception of experience.
