I am hearing a feverish pitch for proportional representation. Yes, The first past the post system does not respect the choice of a huge population which did not agree with that eventual winner. But, Proportional representation will rob people of the choice of whom to represent them. If there is proportional representation in Tamilnadu, AIADMK- 18 DMK- 10 NDA- 10 Cong- 1 Others-1 - will be the approximate tally. Yes, It seems the true wishes of the people has been respected. But, Who will be the MPs representing us? It will be the party high commands that will decide the candidates. It could be Kanimozhi,Udhayanithi,Dhayanithi Maran,Durai Dhayanithi,Kayalvizhi,Khushboo,A.Raja,TR Balu... It could be Karthi Chidambaram in congress. It will be people closer to party bosses who will be forced down the throats of the voters ? Do people want them? Is there a geographical distribution ? Which MP will cater to Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam ? Democracy will become a Top-Down approach Inverting and hijacking the fundamental realms of democracy. A man cant arise from grassroots to cater to the needs of his constituency. If you, me or some one- wants to contest as an independent and serve ones constituency- How will proportional representation allow it? Does not it rob a common mans will and freedom and right to stand for himself and his people against the political parties ? We want a man from Tenkasi or Aarani to represent Tenkasi or Aarani, Not a man from Chennai or Delhi. Isnt it? Proportional representation is fraught with lot more hazards than what might it superfluously appear. Proportional representation will be a fancy academic exercise which might it raise its head when the results of the election are against ones individual wishes- And not an exercise in democratic reality in the near future. And there is an altogether different issue where- People who are happy with the Pan-Indian mandate handed over to crown Modi, are crying and spewing venom over Tamils for having showered laurels on Jayalalithaa. I might not be exactly happy over how Modi has managed to score a thumping majority in Centre, But i take solace in the wiping out of corrupt congress and its current and erstwhile allies and parties that colluded with the crimes of congress. If you respect peoples wishes- If you think the common man believes and choses what is good for him, Do not think that your intellectual superiority or personal bias endows you with the right to ridicule the choice of the people. I am very sad for Vaiko. But it does not mean people of Virudhunagar are morons as some people are cursing. It is the people of Virudhunagar Who should decide Who must represent them? Not you,me or someone else from Madurai,Chennai or Toronto in our air conditioned rooms doodling on our tablets and phones, Scratching our cheeks and assuming and presuming things About what one believes as good for the man in the streets, slums and villages of this nation. We have a right to an opinion- fierce or sober. But not the highhanded arrogance to ridicule the collective will of the people. We deserve what we want. #RESPECT_the_MANDATE
