I am hoping that your patience will be rewarded by offering you a delayed but slightly enhanced (I HOPE!) version of my weekly NFL Top 5 list! I recognize that some of you have had a rough couple of days due to our world going mad, loved ones passing and the stresses of the quickly approaching holiday season. I hope that this provides you all with a break from the daily drama that our lives present and I hope that a smile or two can be brought to you right about...NOW! Lets do this... 1 - Lets get this out of the way: The Patriots are THE best team in football right now. Winners of 7 consecutive games and now owning a share of the best record in the league, the Pats find themselves in the AFC East comfort zone once again. The offense is clicking on all cylinders and the defense is playing their best football in years. They are taking one of the toughest schedule stretches in the league & tossing all contenders aside in a manner that would have been laughable on October 1st. Playoff contenders from Buffalo, Cincy, Denver, Indy and now Detroit ALL defeated by a minimum of 15 points! This weeks trip to Green Bay serves as the final large hurdle of the regular season. A win here and there may be no stopping this train to Tempe...or Phoenix...whatever...Arizona. 2 - Dear Detroit: Rather than crying over your loss to New England & claiming they ran up the score with a late touchdown (in what world is 34-9 a run up by the way?), perhaps you should be focussing on a bigger issue - your lack of offense. The Lions have now been held without a td since Theo Riddick (?! ) scored the game winner over the Dolphins on November 9th. Thats right, your offense has scored ONCE in 3 weeks AND your last 3 victories have been by 1, 1 & 4 points respectively. Wasnt this your year? While youre busy trying take take out players knees while your qb is taking one, Green Bay (and now Chicago by the way) are taking you out of contention again. Good thing its Thanksgiving because Detroit always shows up on turducken day and you get Da Bears. Lose this one and its all over for the Simbas. 3 - HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS?! Yep, I stopped watching after halftime too only to learn the next morning that the Giants imploded once again to allow the Cowboys to regain a share of the NFC East lead by winning 31-28. Not only did this game feature the road crowd chanting Lets Go Cowboys!, a cheer they cant get from their own home fans, we got to witness what was not only the play of the year but perhaps the greatest catch in NFL history per Odell Beckham III (whats up with Giants recievers making crazy sick catches all the time...?!). Incase you missed it: youtube/watch?v=ApBsy3rALok The Cowboys on VERY short rest get to head home for a Thanksgiving showdown with the Eagles in the 1st of two matchups between the division co-leaders in the next three weeks. The Giants are now eliminated from anything playoff/division related with still 5 games to go. At least you get Jacksonville next week... 4 - While the Dolphins were ... close to taking out the Broncos & erasing all doubts as to their contender status, you know who did prove themselves to be exactly who we thought they were? youtube/watch?v=ECTt67adObl No Coach Green, not the Bears I was talking about the FALCONS. I guess calling them out last week didnt result in taking a step away from mediocrity as they subjected fans to joy by taking the lead in the final minute against the Browns only to watch the defense allow Brian Hoyer to throw up the MIDDLE OF THE FIELD on 4 straight plays and allow the Brownies to kick a game winning field goal as time expired. Of course, if the Saints beat the Ravens, the Falcons could go back to the cellar but NOOOOOOO! The Saints also folded faster than me holding 10-2 across the table from Phil Helmuth. The Falcons keep the division lead and heres the fun stat of the day on these turkeys: 0-7 against teams outside of the NFC South. As Charles Barkley would say: Turrible...just turrible... 5 - Finally, it took 368 days. 368 days & 16 straight losses but the Raiders are finally on the board! Of course, only the Raiders could find a way to almost lose by celebrating a victory that they hadnt earned yet! Thanks to some quick thinking by veteran Justin Tuck, the Raiders called timeout just a hair before the Chiefs could have a free play against a defense that was missing 4 players who were too busy dancing to finish the game. I know, hard to believe so have a look at the evidence: youtube/watch?v=VISEvr3cOwg Stat of the week: Prior to Thursday nights Raider victory, QB Matt Schaub had lost every game he was involved in (24) since September 15th, 2013. Last year, Schaub & the Texans lost their last 14 games and then his new team in Oakland started this season 0-10. Throw in 2 bye weeks and this is Schaubs 1st taste of victory in 26 weeks! Congrats Matt!!! Honorable Mention: Detroit residents being given free tickets to the relocated Bills/Jets game and then trying to scalp them for $125 each. Only in Merica!!!
