I am not clear what excessive salaries and benefits Green is talking about. They can skip across the city line and make the same salary and more in other township school systems. With the Principals union having caved to the Districts threats, the teachers are now on their own, in a race to the bottom. As parents, we did not support the principals taking a pay cut, and we dont want our teachers punished either. Qualified educators are leaving the public school system, while the District hires less qualified personnel. Hites privatization and union busting plan is humming along, while the children lose out and parents head for the exits. There is no model anywhere in a major US city, of a completely privatized corporate school system. Ultimately, that is the goal of the Eli Broad Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg, TFA, and Obamas education czar Arnie Duncan. Public tax dollars go to fund private charter schools, which in PA do not have stringent financial disclosure rules. If you think that public school dollars are squandered, wait until we have replaced all public schools with charters. The $6,000,000+ theft by charter school leader June Brown will seem like pocket change. It is proven that a city without a solid public school system is going to lose middle class families, and fail to attract new businesses looking to relocate here. Philadelphia has some of the highest business taxes in the nation, and heads of companies now need to add to that deficit, fewer school choices for their employees. Another factor is AVI, which slapped homeowners like my wife and I with huge, unaffordable property tax increases. So as the schools decline from deliberate underfunding, our property taxes have doubled to the point where we are looking outside Philadelphia for a home and decent public schools that are not being undermined by education privateers. This is a massive fail for Nutter and city leadership in general.
